Community Health

... Finding the keys for change

"We are not the key to the health of the peoples of the world.  They are."
(author unknown)

 IN DEVELOPING NATIONS...
  • 1.2 billion people live in absolute poverty (earn less than $1 USD/person/day)

  • 1.5 billion people have no access to basic health care in their local communities (25% of the world's population, and 30-50% of people in the 35 poorest nations).

THE BIG KILLERS in our world today are Preventable

Infectious and Parasitic Diseases and Basic Sanitation

27,400 people die each day
(10 million per year)

Diarrhoeal Diseases

5,500 children die each day
(2 million per year)

Respiratory Infections

10,950 people die each day
(4 million per year)

Lack of Vaccinations/Immunizations

4,100 children die each day from Measles, Polio, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis
(1.5 million/year)

Malaria

2,750 people die each day
(1million/year)

Tuberculosis

5,500 people die each day
(2 million/year)

Hunger (Malnutrition)

1,370 people die each day
(.5 million/year)

Childbirth

1,370 women die each day
(.5 million/year)

 Total  = 58,900 deaths / day

21.5 million deaths / year

This is why what little we do to prevent these can have a major impact.

Community Health Team Introduction
Our vision as a team is to work with a community to improve their overall condition of health, help meet immediate health needs, and above all share and demonstrate the love of Jesus. We hope to reflect and promote the 'shalom' (peace) of God.  This word reflects wholeness in spirit, mind and body.

Team Goals:

 - Long Term Change
 - Helping the Poor and Needy

Long Term Change

For our work to be long lasting we believe it is necessary to partner with people in the community. We begin an outreach with making an assessment of potential communities and gain understanding of existing health structures, part of this is done by the medical representative on the advance team (that goes to the country ahead of the ship to prepare). The team on the ship and on 'advance' pray for God's guidance and an understanding of what 'piece of the puzzle' we are to be for the people we will be working with.

Helping the Poor and Needy

Jesus teaches us to have compassion and show mercy to the poor.  We want to help those who have little power to help themselves, who are impoverished financially, spiritually and socially.

"He defended the cause of the poor and needy...Is that not what it means to know me?" declares the Lord

Jeremiah 22: 16

"He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honours God"

Proverbs 14:31
